How to prepare for a hike in the mountains

Mountains reward effort like few things do, but they do not forgive a lack of preparation. Before you set off on the trail, it is worth sorting a few things. Here is how to prepare for a hike in the mountains so you come back with views, not problems.

Match the trail to your ability

Check the length, elevation gain and walking time, and assess your fitness honestly. Better to start with an easier route and finish smiling than to get stuck halfway up an overambitious trail.

Sort out your gear

The basics are good ankle boots, layered clothing, a rain jacket, water and something to eat. Always keep a charged phone, a first-aid kit and a headtorch in your pack.

Check the weather and time

In the mountains the weather changes fast, and an afternoon storm is a real danger. Set off early and have a fallback plan in case the weather turns.

Safety first

Tell someone your route and expected return time, save the mountain rescue number and do not leave the trail. Turning back is not a failure — it is part of good sense in the mountains.

Save your route

A mountain hike is ready-made material for a story. Mark the trail and viewpoints in TRAMFI to keep the route and suggest it to others. If you are still planning the whole trip, start with our guide to planning a trip.
