Holiday packing list

A good holiday packing list saves nerves at the airport and money on replacing forgotten odds and ends. This universal checklist works for most trips — just adapt it to the destination and season.

Documents and money

ID or passport, tickets, bookings, an EHIC and/or insurance, two payment cards and some cash in local currency. Keep scans of documents in the cloud and in your email too.

Clothes matched to the weather

A few days' worth you can combine and wash, plus one warmer layer and something waterproof — even in summer. Comfortable, broken-in shoes.

Electronics

Chargers, a power bank, a plug adapter (if the standard differs) and headphones. A phone with offline maps often replaces half your separate gadgets.

Toiletries and a first-aid kit

Toiletries in small containers, sunscreen, basic medicines and anything you take regularly. More on the contents in our guide to the travel first-aid kit.

Pack smart, not heavy

Roll clothes instead of folding, and keep the heaviest items against your back or at the bottom of the case. If you are flying carry-on only, see what to pack in your carry-on. You can plan the places you want to visit in TRAMFI in advance.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start packing?

Prepare the list a few days ahead, and do the packing itself the day before — calmly, ticking off items.

How do I avoid going over the baggage limit?

Weigh the case at home and leave room for souvenirs. Wear your heaviest clothes and shoes while travelling.
