In the mountains the weather can change within an hour, so packing for a week in the mountains is above all a sensible layering system and well-chosen boots. The rest is detail a checklist handles easily.
Clothing layers
The three-layer rule works: breathable base layer, an insulating layer (fleece or down) and an outer layer against wind and rain. Instead of one thick garment — several thinner ones you can combine.
Boots and socks
The most important piece of kit. Boots must be broken in before the trip, and pack spare trekking socks — wet feet are the shortest path to blisters.
Safety and navigation
A charged headtorch, a first-aid kit, a map or offline app and a charged power bank. Higher up, add sun protection — the sun in the mountains is stronger than it seems.
Do not overpack
For a week you do not need seven sets of clothes — a few you can wash are enough. You feel every extra kilo on the climb.
Plan the route and save it
Before you pack, match your gear to the route — see how to prepare for a hike in the mountains and how to pack a backpack for trekking. After the trip, save the route as a story in TRAMFI.
Frequently asked questions
How big a backpack for a week in the mountains?
With mountain-hut stays, 30–40 l is usually enough; with your own tent and food — 50–65 l.
Should I take spare clothes?
A minimum. Better to carry less and wash on the way than to haul a heavy pack for a whole week.
