Travel insurance — what it must cover

Good travel insurance is not a formality but protection against costs that can be enormous abroad. It is worth knowing what to look for before grabbing the cheapest policy going.

Medical costs and a high sum insured

This is the most important element. The sum should be high — in many countries hospital treatment and medical transport cost tens of thousands. Check that it also covers repatriation.

Assistance and 24/7 help

A round-the-clock helpline that arranges help and contact with the hospital can be worth more than the amount itself. Without it you are left alone with the bill and the language barrier.

Accident, liability and baggage cover

Personal accident cover, liability (if you cause damage yourself) and baggage protection are typical add-ons. Check the limits and required reporting.

Beware of exclusions

Sports, skiing, diving, manual work or travel against government warnings often need an extension. Pre-existing conditions may also be excluded — read the terms.

Insurance is part of the preparation

A policy goes hand in hand with documents and safety — see which documents to take abroad and how to stay safe while travelling. Plan your trip in TRAMFI.

Frequently asked questions

Is the EHIC enough in Europe?

Not always — the EHIC covers only public healthcare on the destination's terms and does not pay for repatriation or private treatment. Travel insurance is broader.

Does my payment card include travel insurance?

Sometimes, but the scope can be limited and may require, say, paying for the trip with that card. Check the terms before relying on it alone.
